What a Week!

What a great first week!  Everyone has adjusted well to second grade and our classroom. We still have lots of work to do, but I can tell it's gonna be a great year.

Introducing Mrs. Locke

Wilkinson Elementary has a new counselor. Her name is Kelly Locke. She came into the Hive to introduce herself to all the students. She stated that she will be meeting with each one of them just to say hello, have them get comfortable with her, and also to learn our Wilkinson student population. I have only known her for a short while, but I can tell she is a great addition to our Wilkinson family.
Your child will be coming home today with a paper from her so that they can further explain to you what her job is at the school.

Nicky Noun

This week we focused on Nouns. A noun is a person, place or thing. This is a review from first grade, and the kids did very well. Each student had the opportunity to add a person, place and a thing to my friend Nicky!  After adding nouns to Nicky, we also found nouns in our writing.
Writing will have great emphasis this year. I strive to make each student a great author while also instilling a love for the "task" as well. These small mini lessons on grammar will be one key to making your child a better writer.
Nicky is a reminder of what a noun is. He will stay on our classroom wall for a while.

Snacks!

This week I have been providing all students with a snack. After this first week, snacks will only be given if they are donated by parents. Things you may send for snack are pretzels, goldfish, cookies, animal crackers, graham crackers, etc. Right now, our snack stash is low. If you can donate a snack, the class would greatly appreciate it.

Our first day of Second Grade!

We had an awesome first day!  One of my favorite things we did was  to read a book called First Day Jitters.  It's all about someone who is going to a new school and doesn't want to get up and get moving on the first day. She has all kinds of worries and what ifs about the first day. At the end, you find out it's actually the teacher who was nervous!  I love a good book with a twist at the end!
Anyway, we all drank some "Jitter Juice" just in case we had any jitters of our own....I think it worked!
