Working on our Writing

We have been doing more work on our writing. These are two samples from a writers workshop session. Just recently I talked to the class about labeling their pictures. I was excited to see some of the kids use a few labels!. Right now, my main concern during our writing time is for each child to draw a picture that they can actually talk about, or that tells a story. Is like to see them draw recognizable pictures of people and places using details.

Fire Saftey Week

I'm a little late, but the week before last was FIRE SAFETY WEEK!  We did a lot of talking about what to do when there is a fire at home and at school.  We talked about dialing 911 in case of emergencies and we made our own firefighter hats.  To top it all off...at the end of the week, a fire fighter came with a fire truck!  We asked him many questions, and got to walk around and look inside of the truck.

Storybook Character Pumpkins

Storybook character pumpkins are due pretty soon. Have you made one? This is "Angelina Ballerina". If you do a Google search for storybook character pumpkins our school will come up. Then, you can see more ideas from years past. Have fun with this family project, and don't forget to stop by the Wilkinson Library and visit the Storybook Pumpkin Patch.

Hh Show and Tell

During our Hh show and tell we saw a horse, a hog, a hamster, hats, a headband and Hello Kitty!  Way to use your noggins! Those were awesome Hh items.  :)

Cheez-Its with letters!

Look at this cool snack! We tried to find cheezits that had letter found in our names. We love learning through snacks!

Reminder

Tomorrow is our first official show and tell. Please help your child pick an item that begins with the Hh sound to bring to school.  Don't pick it for them. Please assist them in making their choice.

We are starting SHOW AND TELL!!!

I am going to try something new this year.  I would like to implement "show and tell" into our weekly letter studies.  Every Thursday I will ask the students to bring one thing that begins with the letter that we are studying for the week.  Their item must be able to fit in their backpack, and can only be taken out during our "Show and Tell" time.  This week our letter study was on the letter Ff.  I didn't tell parents but I told the kids, "If you remember, bring something that starts with the Ff sound".
There were only a handful of kids that remembered, but it gave me an opportunity to give this new activity a trial run. I think by going home and finding one item with the appropriate sound, they are having a one on one mini lesson with their parent/guardian to review the letter of the week.  I hope you participate in Show and tell this week.  Look on our weekly newsletter to see what letter we will be reviewing this week.

Below are some pictures of Ff items students brought in last week. Way to go!

Mr. Denis Lee

The morning class got the opportunity to see the talented ventriloquist, Mr. Denis Lee.  He talked about being positive and doing your best.  His show was called Banana Soup.  The following was taken from his website:

"BANANA SOUP" is my brand new show. It begins September 2012. "BANANA SOUP" is my secret recipe for good character and great choices. We will be teaching students the value of learning to listen to their parents and teachers... "LISTEN UP" The joy that comes from having a positive attitude and learning how to "LOOK UP".
We will also explore in our FUNKY MONKEY KITCHEN how to use our hands to help others in our community..."LIFT UP". With clear anti-bully, anti-drug, messages, "BANANA SOUP" promises to help your students grow, glow, and go!

TEXAS and AMERICAN FLAGS

This week we talked about the Texas flag and the American flag.  We went over both flags attributes.
The American Flag has 50 stars which represent the 50 states of America.  It also has 13 stripes which represent the first 13 colonies.

The Texas Flag has one Lone Star and a red and a white stripe.  The red on the Texas flag stands for strgnth, the blue bravery, and the white purity.

Little Miss Muffet

We learned lots of new vocabulary in our nursery rhyme last week.  We also practiced counting to 8 out loud and with objects.

Sorting Goldfish!

Did you know you can sort regular orange goldfish. Only some of the goldfish have faces. We sorted my ones with and ones without faces the other day. Pretty neat!
