Matter with Jello

Our matter study is coming to an end. We had lots of fun with this unit. Lots of excitements, Popsicles, big bubbles filled with gas, and now jello!  We made jello change stated from a liquid to a solid, ad then back to a liquid again. We talked about reversible and irriversae changes. When we poured the jello powder into water and mixed it up, that was an irreversable change. On the other hand, wen we change that jello solution from a liquid to a solid, that was a reveraible change...cause we could make it go back to the jello solution. Well, next week we have a big test on Matter.  I think the kids are well prepared for it. We also have a test on grammar (nouns, verbs, adjectives) and continents. Everyone should have gotten a study guide for the continents that went home on Monday.

I'm Ready For Volunteers!

Okay! It's been a long time coming, but I'm finally ready for my volunteers.  My sister introduced me to a website called sign up genius, and I'm going to give it a try.  I have posted LOTS of ways you can volunteer from now until the end of 2013.  In order to sign up for something, just click on the link below, and put your name in the slot that you would like to help with.  Thanks to those who sign up for a job!
I am definitely okay with not having all the slots filled up...like I said, there are LOTS of slots to choose from. Some jobs start this week so make sure you are looking at the dates and times carefully when you sign up.
I would also like some feedback on the website.  If it works well, I would like to know so I can use it again in the spring.  If it is not user friendly and you don't like it, let me know that also...then I will be sure not to use it for sign ups again.

Here is where you sign up:

P.S.  Remember that if you would like to volunteer in the school, you need to fill out a volunteer application.  This is to keep our students safe.  :)

Sight Words

We have been working very hard on identifying our 21 sight words. We use flashcards, play games, and even try and use the words in or writing. Here are some games that we play.

Sight word stack:
write sight words on plastic cups. Identify the cup. If you identify it right, begin to stack them to make a tower. How high can you make your tower?

Sight word parking lot:
Use flash cards to identify the sight words. If you identify it correctly, park a car in the parking lot. Play until the parking lot is full!

You can easily make and play these games at home.

Emergency Information Form

Please be sure to send your lavender "Emergency Information" paper back to school by FRIDAY.  I still have a lot of students who have not turned them in.  I have sent a second round of sheets home with students who have not brought them back yesterday.  Please make sure you complete this task.  If you dont, you will have to show proof of residency BEFORE being admitted to a classroom in the upcoming school year.  Thanks for your promptness in this matter!

Getting Back On Track

Well, I have been back from maternity leave for almost two months now, and haven't made any posts on this blog!  Apparently being a mother of two and having two classes of prek students is very time consuming.
Please forgive me for my lack of keeping up with my long "to-do" list.  As of right now, I am vowing to get back on track with blogging.  There will be multiple post in the next week, because I have been keeping up with taking pictures and of course teaching.
Thanks for your patience when I was away!

Here is a picture of my sweet baby boy that has been stealing some of my blogging time.  :)

Working on our Writing

We have been doing more work on our writing. These are two samples from a writers workshop session. Just recently I talked to the class about labeling their pictures. I was excited to see some of the kids use a few labels!. Right now, my main concern during our writing time is for each child to draw a picture that they can actually talk about, or that tells a story. Is like to see them draw recognizable pictures of people and places using details.

Fire Saftey Week

I'm a little late, but the week before last was FIRE SAFETY WEEK!  We did a lot of talking about what to do when there is a fire at home and at school.  We talked about dialing 911 in case of emergencies and we made our own firefighter hats.  To top it all off...at the end of the week, a fire fighter came with a fire truck!  We asked him many questions, and got to walk around and look inside of the truck.

Storybook Character Pumpkins

Storybook character pumpkins are due pretty soon. Have you made one? This is "Angelina Ballerina". If you do a Google search for storybook character pumpkins our school will come up. Then, you can see more ideas from years past. Have fun with this family project, and don't forget to stop by the Wilkinson Library and visit the Storybook Pumpkin Patch.

Hh Show and Tell

During our Hh show and tell we saw a horse, a hog, a hamster, hats, a headband and Hello Kitty!  Way to use your noggins! Those were awesome Hh items.  :)

Cheez-Its with letters!

Look at this cool snack! We tried to find cheezits that had letter found in our names. We love learning through snacks!

Mr. Denis Lee

The morning class got the opportunity to see the talented ventriloquist, Mr. Denis Lee.  He talked about being positive and doing your best.  His show was called Banana Soup.  The following was taken from his website:

"BANANA SOUP" is my brand new show. It begins September 2012. "BANANA SOUP" is my secret recipe for good character and great choices. We will be teaching students the value of learning to listen to their parents and teachers... "LISTEN UP" The joy that comes from having a positive attitude and learning how to "LOOK UP".
We will also explore in our FUNKY MONKEY KITCHEN how to use our hands to help others in our community..."LIFT UP". With clear anti-bully, anti-drug, messages, "BANANA SOUP" promises to help your students grow, glow, and go!

TEXAS and AMERICAN FLAGS

This week we talked about the Texas flag and the American flag.  We went over both flags attributes.
The American Flag has 50 stars which represent the 50 states of America.  It also has 13 stripes which represent the first 13 colonies.

The Texas Flag has one Lone Star and a red and a white stripe.  The red on the Texas flag stands for strgnth, the blue bravery, and the white purity.
