Pennies and Dimes

This week we are working on the value of a penny and a dime. In first grade they should have touched on identifying these coins, but now we have to know their worth and be able to count money. I used Thea poems in class to remember the coins value.

Penny:
Penny, penny
Easily spent,
Copper, brown
And worth one cent.

Dime:
Dime dime
Little and thin,
I remember,
You're worth 10!

In addition to knowing their worth, we have to know the different ways to show the value of these coins. We never mix the cent sign with a doll or sign or a decimal.

This is how we count money.
We talk about how money has invisible hairs coming off of it. Each hair is worth 5. A dime had two invisible hairs. A penny doesn't have any! It's only worth 1 cent. So i remember to count a penny by making an invisible little dot.  This helps us count up our money!  See the picture below for an example.
If your child can count money ( just the dime and penny for now) using hairs (or without) they are doig a-ok!
