What do you learn is Second Grade?

What do you learn in second Grade?
Good question!

Texas Essential Knowledge Skills is a document that outlines all skills learned in each grade.  The link will take you to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) website.  From there, scroll down to find the second grade option and look at all subjects skills.

Non-Fiction Text Features

We have spent a while talking about non fiction text features. Today we went on a scavenger hunt for the features in books from the library. These are some of the features we found!
Maps

Labels

There's a caption at the bottom if the page on the right.

The index is usually found in the back of the book.

Table of Contents

A photograph of a cat, and also a caption.

More labels!

A glossary

A timeline

Another map!

Its hard to tell from this picture, but the word hibernate is bolded.

Apparently everyone wanted to be on the blog, so here's most of the class showing glossaries.

Today I sent home a study guide for the features of non fiction. Go over them with your child. If you have a book at home, you can do what we did in class. Find as many features as you can!

Hive Changes

Well, it seems that the hive is moving....Moving up in grades that is.  This up coming school year I will be teaching Second grade.  That's a big jump from Kindergarten and Pre-K.  Throughout the summer, I will be updating and changing some of the information found on the blog.  I would like to keep my previous years of blogging, but I will be changing some of the main information to Second grade info.  Bare with me...you know how technology can be when trying to manipulate it the way you want.  :)

Wilkinson PRIDE Pledge and Core Essentials

Written by our school counselor:

Wilkinson P.R.I.D.E. and Core Essentials

Our theme for guidance at Wilkinson Elementary is “Wilkinson Pride” and the program we have adopted is Core Essentials. At Wilkinson, we would like for all of our students to be members of the
Wilkinson Pride. Each year we work work together to reinforce character values not only in the
classroom but school wide and at home.

About Core Essentials

Core Essentials is a character education program, designed for grades K-5, that provides simple,
straight-forward tools allowing schools to quickly incorporate character education into the curriculum.

The program provides a "value of the month" focus that encourages individual classrooms, the entire
school, and every family to emphasize the same aspects of each value. Core Essentials is designed to
synchronize the home and school by presenting values that we can both teach. Core Essentials believes that it takes an INWARD attitude to influence OUTWARD behavior. A value is an inward belief or attitude that affects someone's outward behavior. The values that Core Essentials emphasizes are common attitudes that every parent and teacher wants children to learn and
demonstrate.

Values affect behavior by helping you . . .
·treat others right
·make smart decisions
·maximize your potential

Throughout the month, teachers and administration will be rewarding students who demonstrate
knowledge of the Value of the Month. Students will have the opportunity to receive a Value-able Card (a coupon for a free child's meal at Chick-fil-A) or to have their name submitted for the end the month drawing for a Chick-fil-A catered lunch. Attending the Chick-fil-A lunch is a big honor here at Wilkinson. If your child's name is drawn, they will be given an invitation to the Wilkinson P.R.I.D.E. Party. They will will receive a certificate, their very own medal, and have their picture taken. Pictures are displayed throughout the year in the cafeteria for students and parents to enjoy.
Our values from year to year are always changing. Information about these values will be sent home in the monthly news letter and posted on my website. Please log on to my website at

http://wilkinson.conroeisd.net/Teachers/ndonoho/ for more information on how we can work together
to make sure that your child stays a member of the Wilkinson Pride.

I am a member of the Wilkinson PRIDE.

I will take Personal Responsibility for my actions.

I will have Integrity.

I will make good Decisions.

I will show Excellence in all I do.
